        Compte-rendu de Phunkay Well, that's it! Maceo's european tour ended with a bang in lovely countryside city of Peer in Belgique last night. After a one hour drive (which is pretty long for Belgique norms ) I arrived in Peer. The venue was a cultural center, which meant it was a pretty small concert hall (capacity 450) and audience (300 at most) which was cool. The audience was as diverse as with the other concerts, also because the concert was held under the 'Motives For Jazz' flag. At 8.50 the venue was only partly filled which may have been the reason why the concert wad delayed by 20 minutes and started at 9.20 instead of 9.00. And even then the place was far from packed, which made it all the more comfortable. It was immediately clear that the sound was much better than in Ghent on the 23rd of November. Maybe a bit loud for the small venue. But as the saying goes 'If it's too loud, you're too old!' so I'd better refrain from further commenting.. All the usual suspects both on stage and on the setlist, no surprises there. But the songs seemed to free float more and they were challenging eachother every now and then more than usual. Maybe they did wanna give it their extra best because it was their last gig in Europe and they have a couple of weeks off now. Lots of goofing around and inside jokes going on. During the 'Quiet Storm' intermission with Morris on keys it took the crowd a bit of time before they picked up on 'Purple Rain' but once they recognized it you could close your eyes and imagine being at a Prince concert . After the break Maceo played happy birthday for a few people that had their birthday. He played a 'happy birthday' solo in the next song too. The concert ended around 0.15 when Maceo and da band ('What about da band?') thanked the audience extensively. Morris stayed last to chat with people and sign CD's. With that the 2% Jazz, 98% Funk that reigned Europe for some weeks ended with a bang! Have a save trip back home Maceo & Da Band, hope to see you again soon!!!
